Here at Park Ridge South it has been mostly bereft of green for a while now. This is obviously similar to your own gardening conditions, but while most of our members are gardening on an average sized house block we are a lot more spread out. While we have nearly 6 acres, we only garden within proximity of our house, but it still difficult to keep everything alive in dry times. Summer always brings a big change to what we try to grow. Plants must be able to survive in full sun, and a good watering twice a week if time permits. So we are currently only growing eggplant, sweetcorn, tomatoes, ginger, turmeric, galangal, italian fryer capsicums, yakon, and rosella as well as other things which are ready to be picked like spring onions, leeks, beetroot, etc.
We also have number of fruit trees, but not all of them are producing much fruit at the moment. On the up side we have two avocado still hanging on our dwarf tree, and the carob tree has a few very dry looking pods hanging on.
We grow mostly in containers - old baths, laundry tubs, chaff sacks, PVC tubes, wheelie bins, a mixture of wicking beds and non wicking. My soil is very sandy, shallow and gutless. I use lots of horse manure to get decent results.
We have a good sized undercover area and loads of chairs. It is likely to be hot here, so wear a hat. You are able to use the pool if you wish but ONLY supervised children will be allowed in the pool area.
If you want to take part in our tomato tasting event, you will need to bring along some tomatoes for us to compare. At the moment it looks like we will have a couple of home grown varieties and we will get a couple of supermarket types.
Roger has now had some rain, not a lot but some to keep things going.
Children welcome but must be supervised by parents at all times.
Please bring a small plate of Festive Food or Drink to share, and any plants, produce or seed that you would like to share, swap or sell. Also if you would like to bring along a small gift to swap please do so. If you are bringing children you may like to bring one for them as well
It is always a good idea to bring along a chair as we do sometimes have more visitors than chairs available at GV gardens.
RSVP required so that the address can be sent to you closer to the date. The email address you nominated when you joined will be used. Please update this if it has changed.
Late attendees welcome. Message Dianne or phone 0407691485 on the day for the address.
