Event Description

Join us for a hands-on morning processing chickens –  you’ll learn how to humanely kill a heritage breed chicken to breaking down to the different cuts. You will take home the knowledge to get started raising your own meat birds and how to dispatch them on a small scale.

Have you ever wondered about the best way to dispatch a chicken but were not sure where to start? Want to learn in a hands on environment to understand the process from start to finish.

We invite you to attend this workshop to kick start your butchery skills and learn in a relaxed and fun environment.

In this workshop you will learn all about:

– Humanely kill a heritage breed chicken
– Learn to pluck feathers
– Break down a whole chicken into different cuts
– Storing your meat
–  When to cook and rest your meat

This is a hands-on workshop, so bring your apron and prepare to get messy. Wear something that you don’t mind getting dirty.

During the morning you’ll be discussing many different methods of dispatching chickens.

You will leave this workshop with:

The knowledge and confidence to go home and process your own birds. You’ll also have a new appreciation of how a chicken is brought to the table.

With your new skills as a poultry butcher you will also understand the different cuts of meat and how to break down a chicken.

About your teachers:

Roy and Julian have been experimenting with chicken processing on the farm for the past year. These two super nerds have read the theory, got their hands dirty and now use the cold plucking method to dispatch the birds. Roy is a part-time farmer and part-time engineer who explains the step by step process from a technical view point.  Julian is an artist with a history degree who is currently building his own home and starting a small scale farm. These two will make the process of killing a chicken a lot less daunting.

 

What to bring:

Bring a pen and notepad, apron and clothes that can get dirty. We’ll provide everything else.

This course will be held at the Huthwaite Farm in Hunchy – which is ten minutes away from both Palmwoods and Montville. On confirmation of booking the address will be sent to you.

The chicken workshop will start at 9am and go until 12pm at Huthwaite Farm. The farm address will be sent on confirmation of payment we are ten minutes away from both Palmwoods and Montville.
